Presentation LO1

Define three different types of campaign and explain the purpose of each. Give examples to illustrate your points. Now  examine one campaign in detail and make notes under the following headings:

  1. Describe the type of campaign you are investigating ?

  1. What is the overall aim of the campaign and how do you know this ?

  1. Who is the implied target audience for the campaign and  how do you know this from the language and images used in the campaign?

  1. What media does the campaign use to get across it’s message ?

  1. Where, when and how is the message communicated ? (i.e what is the context in which the campaign is shown, what form does it take) How does   the specific context of the campaign allow the message to reach its intended audience ?

  1. What is the message of the campaign ? How does the language use in the campaign (text and images) signify this ?

  1. What is the campaign seeking to persuade it’s target audience to do ? How do you know this ?

  1. How does the layout/design contribute to the overall effect of the message ?

  1. How effective do you feel the campaigns message is ? What are its strength and weaknesses ?

  1. How well has the overall campaign been designed  ?

  1. How effective has the campaign material been designed in relation to appealing to the it’s audience ?

  1. What are the strengths and weakness of the campaign ? (in terms of its message, the media it uses, the layout and design of the campaign material, and language used in the campaign (words and images used),

  1. Select an image that you feel could communicate the central idea of the campaign  and then write a caption that would ‘anchor’ the message of the campaign to it.


Investigating the print media of a campaign

Look at examples of charity posters/adverts/leaflets for the campaign that you’re investigating, then complete the following exercises for each one.

Exercise 1
Write down your comments the advert or poster you’re analysing, using the headings provided in the grid below.
  • Describe the purpose of the campaign
  • Describe the main elements used in the poster or the advert.

  • Describe who/what is shown ?
  • What effect is created ?
Copy
  • What words/phrases are used in the literature ?
  • What images/ideas do they suggest ?
Message
  • What is the message that the words and pictures are aiming to communicate ?
  • What feelings does the campaign message aim to evoke and what features in the ad produce these responses?
  • What is the target audience being persuaded to do by the campaign ?
Audence
  • Who is the campaign aimed at ?
  • How do you know this ?
  • What is the context of the campaign ?
  • (When and where is the campaign displayed ?)
  • How does the choice of the context for the campaign suggest the implied audience
  • What is the purpose of the ad
  • What ideas/feelings does the overall message aim to convey ?
  • What features of the campaign were effective and why ?
